With its history stretching back to 1824, the North Andover Common has served as the center of Town activities since its creation. In the 1890s the Common provided facilities “To keep the young men off the streets at night,” and Town residents planted family vegetable pots during both World Wars in support of the war effort. However, more central to public life, the Common has been the site of regular concerts, parades, ceremonies and community gatherings. Accordingly, the Old North Andover Common became the appropriate site for North Andover’s 2nd Annual Field of Honor® display featuring hundreds of United States flags displayed amid its beautiful trees and greenery.
Scheduled for the two weeks leading up to Flag Day, the event honors heroes, who by their acts have honored Old Glory. The flag’s thirteen stripes symbolize the thirteen colonies that created the United States, and the stars displayed in the canton stand for fifty states united in aspirations and a common heritage. This stirring display will bring the community together in a patriotic tribute to honor our heroes who defend, protect and serve us and our neighbors. Each flag represents an individual and tells a story. Flags may be sponsored to honor individuals serving in our military, veterans who have served and all who have become our heroes.
The North Andover Field of Honor ® display is a gift to the community made possible through donations, sponsorships and the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. You can show your support and gratitude by sponsoring a flag or making a donation.
This is an experience hard to describe, but never to be forgotten. We invite all to visit the North Andover Field of Honor® display and walk with us among the posted flags. The display is open to all without charge. Don’t miss it!
