The Grounds of Spring Hill Cemetery provide a feeling of comfort and healing for visitors throughout the year, which is heightened each September 11th. Thousands of U.S. flags fly in solemn formation tribute to the lives sacrificed in the terrorist attacks of September 11th of 2001. Huntington’s Healing Field® display also remembers the loss of student athletes, coaches, officials and supporters of Marshall University’s football team when their chartered plane crashed while returning to Huntington after a game. Proceeds of the annual Healing Field® event purchased the bell tower, which pays respect to 9/11 victims and those lost in Marshall University’s unforgettable tragedy.
The Huntington Healing Field® display is a gift to the community made possible through donations, sponsorships and the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. You can show your support and gratitude by sponsoring a flag or making a donation.

First lady’s visit draws attention to opioids effect on foster care system

“I walked her down the first dozen flags or so and invited her to walk alone inside this Field of Honor®, each one of these flags represent one of the children that are currently in foster care in Cabell County,” said Kevin Brady, executive director of the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District. “There are 453 flags, and she was taken back by that number. Those are kids up to 17 years of age and we discussed how the opioid epidemic has an impact on that.”

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — There are many people in the Tri-State area who have been affected by the drug epidemic including countless families. Some of whom have been ripped apart, with children living with foster families as their parents battle addiction.
Adoptions officials hope the first lady’s visit will help their mission.
Melania Trump called Huntington a place that is very special to her. During her visit Monday, she saw firsthand the number of children in foster care in the area, largely due to the opioid crisis.
Healing Field® returns to Huntington cemetery

The Healing Field® is making its return to Huntington. The Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District is holding the Healing Field® at Spring Hill Cemetery from Sept. 6 through Sept. 13. Thousands of American flags are placed at the cemetery to serve as a vigil to the thousands of victims who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as well as those who died in the 1970 Marshall football plane crash and Veterans of the Armed Forces.

9/11 Memorial Freedom Ride to raise money for all-inclusive playground

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, the Park District will place more than 3,000 American flags at Spring Hill Cemetery for the only Healing Field® in West Virginia. Flags will be on display through Sept. 13 and can be purchased for $35 at Spring Hill Cemetery. Proceeds benefit the Spring Hill Cemetery Memorial Bell Tower Fund.
Huntington’s WTC Artifact Memorial Opens Sept. 11

A new Plaza built around the World Trade Center Artifact Memorial will be unveiled in Spring Hill Cemetery during the Patriot Day Ceremony. This Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, September 11, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery, 1427 Norway Ave, Huntington, WV 25705 (home of the 9/11 Healing Field®).
